Two of the most popular flooring options on the market are PVC and laminate. But what’s the difference between these two materials? We’ll break it down for you!
What is PVC?
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is a durable, strong, synthetic material, making it an excellent choice for spaces with heavy foot traffic. PVC is waterproof, which also makes it suitable for bathrooms and kitchens. A PVC floor can last about 15 to 30 years, depending on the wear layer. PVC is easy to maintain. Sweeping, vacuuming, and occasional mopping are enough to keep your floor in good condition.
What are the advantages of a pvc floor?
- Waterproof (except for click floors on HDF basis)
- Suitable for floor heating and cooling
- Adapts easily to temperatures and offers very low resistance with floor heating
- Whisper-quiet due to high noise reduction from footsteps
- Inherently much quieter than, for example, laminate. In combination with an underlay, some types of PVC flooring achieve a reduction of up to 20dB!
- Hardly distinguishable from real wood and/or tiles
- Low maintenance
What is laminate flooring?
Laminate consists of several layers of glued paper. Laminate is not as durable as PVC, but it’s more resistant to scratches and wear and easier to install. Depending on the thickness of the laminate flooring and proper maintenance, laminate can last between 6 and 20 years.
What are the advantages of laminate flooring?
- Quick and easy to install
- Suitable for almost any room
- Easy to maintain
- The floors are movable
- Indistinguishable from a real wooden floor
- Durable and wear-resistant
