Parquet on floor heating
Floor heating is becoming increasingly popular, and parquet flooring can be installed over floor heating.
Which Wood Types Are Suitable?
Unfortunately, not all types of wooden floors are suitable for installation over floor heating. This is because, with floor heating, floors work (expand and contract) more than average due to temperature differences.
The R-Value of Parquet and Suitability for Underfloor Heating
The R-value (thermal resistance) of parquet is a number that indicates how well/poorly the parquet conducts heat. With floor heating, the R-value should be as low as possible so that the heat from the heating system is transferred to the room as quickly as possible.
Which Wood Types Can Be Installed Over Floor Heating?
Multiplank and engineered wood (lamelparket) are highly suitable for installation over floor heating. Solid parquet is not suitable for this.
Which kind of wooden floors are suitable for floor heating?
The following Multiplank and slat parquet types are suitable for floor heating: oak, red oak, ash, beech, maple (sycamore), birch, cherry, jatoba, merbau, tali, walnut (nut), padoek, and iroko.
Primary and Secondary Heating
With parquet over floor heating, we differentiate between primary and secondary heating. Floor heating as primary heating warms an entire room. With floor heating as secondary heating, radiators are also present in the room. For primary heating, the maximum R-value of parquet and underlay/adhesive layer must be less than 0.13 m²·K/W. For secondary heating, the maximum R-value of parquet and underlay/adhesive layer must be less than 0.18 m²·K/W.
Procedure for Engineered Wood Flooring Over Floor Heating
Engineered wood can be installed either glued down or floating over floor heating. When gluing, a type of adhesive specially suitable for floor heating must be chosen. For floating installation, a special underlay with a low R-value that is suitable for floor heating must be used.
Warranty
To be eligible for warranty, heat detectors must be installed under the wooden floor: one detector per 10m². These detectors ensure that the floor is not heated above 26 degrees Celsius. The warranty is void if the floor is heated above 26 degrees Celsius. Ensure the floor heating is properly adjusted. A plumber can assist with this.
